New Book Tackles Childhood Obesity and Literacy

Michael Opitz talks about linking health, wellness, activity in the classroom, and FitLit (linking literacy and fitness) in this interview about his book, Literacy Lessons to Help Kids Get Fit & Healthy.

Opitz, a former elementary school teacher and reading specialist, is currently a professor of reading at the University of Northern Colorado and author of numerous literacy and assessment books. He will also be presenting at this year's (2012!) ASCD Annual Conference in Philadelphia.

Besides linking into our whole child philosophy that kids need to be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged, his work also fits in with another ASCD Whole Child partner collaboration, Let's Move In School. Let's Move In School looks at how we can get kids active across and throughout the school day and is supported by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
